English version

This fifth issue of EGG, dedicated to the first publications of young conservation-restoration graduates, contains award-winning works from two academic years, 2014 and 2015. Indeed, the structure of the training courses and the date of jury and thesis defences make an annual publication increasingly difficult, not to mention the work involved in selection, educational support for scientific writing and the text revision process. Year after year, we thank the members of the scientific committee for their assistance, given free of charge. We are more aware than ever that this entire project relies on their commitment and dedication and once again, we extend our gratitude to them.

However, so that undertakings such as ours can continue, we have to make a statement. We cannot promote research into conservation (research in the broadest sense, whether it is scientific, applied or, as defined by S.Muñoz Viñas, targeted) without also providing it with the means for distribution. Open Access is an opportunity, but it needs to find ways to resist the temptation of Gold Access, which imposes publication fees on authors (APC). The search for funding and subsidies, if added to the tasks of publishing, may well prove to be the last straw. We are giving some thought to this issue in the hope of finding solutions that will allow us to continue to do what we do, and much more besides and thus move forward. Recognition by the National Fund for Scientific Research of Belgium would not only help to legitimise the work done so far, but also acknowledge the specific nature of our approach. The constant growth in our readership and the website traffic statistics are valuable indicators, which is why we invite you to register using the link below. Our mailing list is reserved exclusively for announcing the publications and calls for articles.

In the dark days of the beginning of this year, punctuated with a number of bereavements, the most salient of which was that of Paul Philippot (we dedicate an In Memoriam to him), we nevertheless want to look towards the swathes of blue sky and the paths that develop.

There are major projects underway: the re-publication, announced last year, the essay on the History of Restoration by R. Marijnissen, accompanied by its glossary of conservation terms in four languages (French, English, German, Dutch); the publication of the proceedings of the ENCORE Conference to be held in Cambridge in April; and finally, the publication of the interventions of the Replace or Remake day organised by INCCA-F and ESBA Tours.

The regular issue of CeROArt will be published at the end of the year. The next issue of EGG will be published in autumn 2017 and is the time to develop a new call and selection procedure and involve training courses more closely in the editing process. We need collaboration.

Meanwhile, Kate Seymour is responsible for the preface to this issue. Her interest, within ICOM-CC, in the teaching of conservation-restoration made her the natural choice to introduce this special issue of EGG, which is the acronym for European Graduated Generation.
